What You Need to Know -And How to Treat It Fast

Gastroenteritis, or “gastro”/ stomach flu, is a common digestive tract infection that causes diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. It’s usually caused by viruses like norovirus or rotavirus, but can result from bacteria (e.g. Salmonella, E. coli) or contaminated food and water.

Common Symptoms

  • Watery or loose stools
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach cramps or pain
  • Fever and fatigue
  • Dehydration (dry mouth, reduced urination, dizziness)

In most cases, gastro/ stomach flu symptoms last 3 to 5 days, but it’s important to stay hydrated and monitor warning signs—especially in children, the elderly, or immunocompromised individuals.

Why Hydration is Key

One of the biggest risks of gastro leading diarrhoea is dehydration, which can be dangerous. Your body loses water and essential electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium & magnesium.

Recommended Treatment:

  • Probiolyte Sachets – A fast- acting oral rehydration salt (ORS) to replace lost fluids and electrolytes, support immune functions, restore gut flora balance and energy. Suitable for all age groups. Mix thoroughly with water and drink.
  • Norit 125mg Tablets- Contains activated carbon which reduces gas & relieves diarrhoea by adsorbing bacteria & toxins before excretion via faeces.
  • Smecta 3g Powder Sachets – This natural clay- based powder helps to coat and protect the intestinal lining, reduce stool frequency and relieve abdominal pain.
  • Vacontil 2mg Capsules (Loperamide)- Used to slow down gut movement and reduce stool frequency.

Prevention Tips:

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap before eating or after using the toilet.
  • Avoid dairy or raw seafood, especially when travelling.
  • Consume only cooked food.
  • Drink bottled or boiled water.

Seek medical attention if you or your child:

  • Have diarrhoea lasting more than 3 days
  • Show signs of dehydration ( dry mouth, no urination >10 hours)
  • Experience bloody stools or high fever
  • Vomit persistently.
